FAQs

Domain transfer locking, sometimes referred to as a "registrar lock" or "theft protection", means that the domain registry will automatically reject any requests to transfer your domain away by unauthorised people.

Technically, this is usually done by applying the clientTransferProhibited or serverTransferProhibited status on the domain name.

You can enable the Transfer Lock through the allthe.domains client area where you manage your domain.

If you're unsure where to find it or have further questions, please get in touch

For gTLD domains like .COM or .BLOG the transfer process is standardised, once the transfer is approved it will usually take 5 - 6 days to complete and be manageable at allthe.domains.

While ccTLDs like .UK or .AT the process can vary, some we can transfer instantly others can take a couple of weeks to process and complete the transfer process.

It may be tempting to delay transferring your domain until it's close to the expiry date, however in most cases this is not advisable as it can cause problems and delays with completing the transfer if it expires soon.

For most domains, transferring will not lose any time and renewing will add an additional year so there's no need to wait! - You will need to wait 60 days in most cases if you've just transferred or registered the domain name with another registrar though.

Some ccTLD domains however do "reset" like .DE domains - if you have questions about your specific domain name our UK-based Domain Experts are ready to help and can provide further guidance on how this will work for you.

For most domains like .COM or .WALES there are only a few situations where you're not able to transfer your domain name, these include if you have registered or transferred the domain in the last 60 days. Some registrars will also lock your domain for 60 days after changing the registrant contact details.

You may also wish to wait before transferring if your domain automatically renewed in the last 45 days as the time you paid for at your previous registrar may be lost.

For most domains the transfer fee includes 1 year renewal, it is not possible to transfer and renew for multiple years at the same time. You can of course renew the domain up to the maximum 10 years after the transfer has completed.
